Oil vs. Acrylic Challenge

November 3 to 26, 2016

Guest Artist: Pamela Mower-Conner

Las Laguna Gallery is to present our most recent exhibition titled Oil and Acrylic Challenge.

Artists use many different mediums to create their works, but the two most popular mediums are oil and acrylic.

Oil paint is often considered a “great classic media”.
Oil paint has been used for hundreds of years and has stood the test of time. Oil paint is slow to dry and allows for blending. It offers a depth that is difficult to achieve with acrylic paint.

Other artists choose acrylic paint as it dries quickly and unlike oil paint, acrylic is easy to clean up with soap and water. There is no need for solvents.

This unique Open Theme exhibition is designed to explore the differences and similarities between the two different mediums.

Bring Us Your Dead (Dia De Los Muertos)
October 6 to 29, 2016

Guest Artist: Gary Irving

Las Laguna Gallery presents Bring Us Your Dead a Day of the Dead themed exhibition.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. It is an ancient and enduring ritual when the living commune with the dead – a mystical night when the veil is lifted between their two realms and they may share a day together.

The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and all banks are closed. The historical roots of this celebration date back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of Meso-America of the indigenous people, especially the Nahua (Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecas, Tlaxcaltec, Chichimec, Tecpanec) and others native to Mexico more than 3,000 years.

Works in this show explore the holiday as well as expands on the theme of Day of the Dead.

Lens-flare - A Photography Exhibition

September 1 to 30, 2016
Guest Artist:  John ONeill

Las Laguna Gallery is proud to announce a Lens-flare – A Photography Exhibition.

Commercially introduced to the public in 1839, photography allowed users to record visual images.  With its inception photographers quickly learned certain “rules” for the creation of the perfect picture. These “rules” include: Subject, Composition, Focus, Lighting, Approach, and Story.

Las Laguna Gallery solicited artists working with various types of cameras to present the captured image with the intent to provide art that evokes emotion, inspires, or excites.

Selected from hundreds of submissions, these twenty artists provided unique interpretation of imagery through their use of photography and mediums.

Works include traditional Photography, Digital Photography, Polaroid, Tintypes and more.

The Power of Three
June 2nd to June 30 , 2016

Lily Nava, Kayla Abedelal and LIz Steinworth

Las Laguna Gallery presents: The Power of Three Kayla Abedelal, Lily Nava, Liz Steinworth.

Experience the thread that connects these three unique artists.

Though the works in this exhibition are quite different from one another, the thread that holds them together is relatively present.

This shows’ unique selection of works allows the viewer to look inward and be transported to another space or time.

Kayla Abedelal creates abstract works inspired by astrology, yoga, music, human emotion, water, and nature.

Lily Nava’s paintings are charged with positive energy, while expressing an overwhelming sense of tranquility. She views her art work as a transformative guide into a world of light and color that offers a mirror to the soul.

LIz Steinworth creates works that emanate a feeling of darkened beauty, something that instills both comfort and fear.

Prayers and Sacred Stories
May 5 to May 28, 2016

Solo Exhibition - Lori Shocket

Las Laguna Gallery is pleased to announce  an exhibition featuring the artwork of Dr. Lori Shocket.

Dr. Lori Shocket has devoted her life to creating a bridge between art and medicine… with an unconventional edge.

Lori Shocket, MD

I identify myself as a Jewish mixed-media artist because my work is directly inspired by my culture. I have a passion for the history and traditions of the Jewish people, and I believe that documenting our journey is critically important for a more peaceful and tolerant path for the future - not only for those of our faith, but for the entire human family.

My work is based upon making a connection between art, science and the human element. I use the periodic table as the foundation of my work, combining physical elements with emotional and spiritual attributes to create powerful visual statements.

My current work is inspired by the textures and patina created by the erosion of earth's elements with the passage of time. I depict these chemical transitions with the use of layered acrylic mediums and earth-based metallic pigments to create textured surfaces. These aged surfaces serve as a foundation on which I place small hand-written scrolls that contain sacred stories and personal prayers that I have collected through my work and travels. The tightly rolled scrolls reveal only a small portion of the message, leaving the interpretation and perceived understanding to the viewer’s imagination.

Artistic Independence

April 7 to April 30, 2016

Special Guest: Bruce Sanders

Selected from hundreds of submissions, Artistic Independence explores Abstract and Noe-Expressionistic works.

Many of the artworks in this exhibition are dominated by robust colors in unlikely highly textural arrangements. Artists showed little restraint in their gestural movements and brush strokes revealing an independence for which this show is so aptly named. This assemblage of work demonstrates swift and playful contrasts illuminating both chaos and order.

The art in this show is reflective and hearkens to works from Georg Baselitz, Francesco Clemente, Anselm Kiefer, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Motherwell.

How I Identify - Myself

March 3 to March 26, 2016

Special Guest: Gary Beeber

How I Identify is an artist exhibition that explores the complexity of the human spirit, mind, and body.

What are the things that make you unique? What things make you stand apart from others? How would you describe yourself and how might others describe you? Is human-kind transforming? Do you identify yourself by gender, race, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation? Is your personality your identity? Can it be changed or is it hardwired?

These are just of few of the ideas that responding artists have explored for this show.
